Privacy Policy

Alea Learning (“Alea”, “we”, “us”, “our”) is an educational service currently operated by an individual (the “operator of Alea Learning”). The business is not yet incorporated, and references to “we” or “Alea” mean that operator. You can reach us at hello@alealearning.com.

This policy explains what personal information we collect through alealearning.com and the Alea applications (together, the “Service”), how we use and share it, and the choices you have. It applies to learners, parents and guardians, teachers and educators, and anyone who contacts us. Please also read our Terms of Service, which govern your use of the Service.

Account and identity. Your email address, a password (stored only as a secure hash by our authentication provider), display name, account role (learner, parent or guardian, or educator), country, and a unique account identifier.

Age and consent information. When someone signs up for K-12 learning, we ask the account holder to confirm they are 18 or older and we record the date that confirmation was made. We store a date of birth only for adults (18 and over). We never store a date of birth for anyone under 18. See Section 7.

Learning profile. The subject or course you choose, grade or proficiency level, goals, confidence and learning-style preferences, strengths and areas to work on, and voice preferences (preferred voice, speed, and whether you use text or voice mode).

Learning and performance data. Your progress through lessons, mastery scores, attempts and timestamps, diagnostic and quiz responses, and the messages you exchange with the AI tutor during a learning session.

Voice and video.When you use the voice tutor, your microphone audio is converted to text by our speech provider so the tutor can respond, and the tutor’s replies are turned back into speech. When you use “Talk to a Teacher”, live audio and video are carried between you and a member of our team. These calls are not recorded.

Communications. Emails we send you and their delivery status (including whether a message bounced), support requests and any note you leave during a call, and messages between educators and their learners (including attachments).

Payment information. If you subscribe, your subscription status, billing cycle, plan, and the identifiers issued by our payment processor. Card and bank details are handled directly by our payment processor; we do not store full payment-card numbers.

Usage and analytics. Basic product-analytics events (such as pages viewed and features used) associated with your account identifier, used to understand and improve the Service.

Cookies and local storage. We use cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in and to remember which profile you are using, along with analytics cookies and limited browser storage used by the Service and the providers listed in Section 6. We do not use cookies for cross-site advertising.

We use personal information to:

• create and operate your account;
• deliver and personalize lessons and the AI tutor;
• run the voice tutor and the live “Talk to a Teacher” support feature;
• process payments and manage subscriptions;
• send service messages and, where permitted, re-engagement emails;
• provide educator, classroom, and guardian features;
• keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose problems;
• understand usage and improve the Service; and
• comply with our legal obligations.

Alea’s tutor is powered by third-party AI models. To generate a response, we send the model the relevant lesson context, your question or answer, and recent conversation from that session. We do not send the model your password, payment details, or unrelated personal data.

AI outputs are generated automatically and may be inaccurate or incomplete; please see our Terms of Service for the limits that apply to AI-generated content. We do not sell your learning conversations and we do not use them to build advertising profiles.

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run the Service, and only as needed for that purpose:

• Authentication, database, and file storage— Supabase (hosted on Google Cloud).
• AI tutoring— OpenRouter and Anthropic (Claude models).
• Voice (speech-to-text and text-to-speech)— ElevenLabs.
• Live “Talk to a Teacher” video— carried over our own self-hosted media servers (hosted with Vultr); not recorded.
• Payments— Razorpay.
• Email delivery— Postmark.
• Hosting— Vercel, and supporting infrastructure providers.
• Product analytics— PostHog (configured to identify you only after you sign in).
• Website analytics— Google Analytics, for aggregate traffic and usage measurement.
• Internal support notifications— a private channel used by our team (receives the caller’s name, role, and the lesson they were on so we can help).

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety, or property of Alea or others, or in connection with a future business transfer. Each provider processes data under its own terms and privacy policy.

Protecting young learners matters to us, and we have designed the Service around it.

• Adults sign up; children are added by a responsible adult.A person under 18 cannot create their own K-12 account. Children use Alea only as a managed learner set up by a parent or guardian, or as a student added by a teacher or school acting under its own authority. By adding a child, that adult confirms they have the authority to consent to our processing of the child’s information for educational purposes.
• We minimize children’s data.We never store a date of birth for anyone under 18, and we collect only what is needed to deliver learning — for example, grade level, progress, and lesson activity.
• No behavioral advertising to children.We do not use children’s data for targeted advertising, and we do not build advertising or behavioral-tracking profiles of children. Analytics are used only to operate and improve the educational Service.
• Live video safety.“Talk to a Teacher” connects a learner with a member of our team. Calls are not recorded. The feature is for in-platform learning support and is not a substitute for a parent, guardian, school, or emergency service.
• Adult controls.Parents, guardians, and schools can request access to, correction of, or deletion of a child’s information by contacting us (Section 11).

If you believe a child has provided us information without the appropriate adult consent, contact hello@alealearning.comand we will take reasonable steps to delete it. We aim to handle children’s personal data consistent with applicable laws, including India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and, for users in other regions, comparable children’s-privacy rules.

We operate from India and use providers that may store and process data in India, the United States, the European Union, and other countries. Where information is transferred across borders, we rely on the safeguards offered by those providers.

We keep personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service, and afterwards only as required to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Learning and account data are deleted or anonymized on request or following account deletion, subject to backups that age out on a rolling basis. Voice-tutor audio is processed in real time and is not stored by us as a recording; live video is not recorded. Analytics data is retained for a limited period by our analytics provider.

We use reputable providers and reasonable technical and organizational measures — including encryption in transit, access controls, and hashed passwords — to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential.

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your personal information, to withdraw consent, or to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these, email hello@alealearning.comfrom the address associated with the account, or, for a child’s data, as the responsible parent, guardian, or school. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You can also unsubscribe from non-essential emails using the link in each message.

Grievances (India). If you have a concern about how we handle your personal data, you may contact our Grievance Officer, Alea Learning, at hello@alealearning.com, and we will work in good faith to resolve it within the timeframe required by applicable law. See our Contact page for details.

The Service may link to third-party websites or services that we do not control. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies, and we are not responsible for them.

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after a change means you accept the updated policy.
